How to Watch Barcelona vs. Las Palmas
Barcelona's match with Las Palmas was subsequently played behind closed doors with club president Bartomeu explaining the club took the decision as an act of defiance.
Barcelona, which openly backed the referendum, had wanted to postpone the game, but its request was denied by the Spanish league.
Pep Guardiola has expressed his disappointment that Barcelona were made to play Las Palmas behind closed doors on Sunday, amidst an emotionally charged referendum on Catalan independence.
"FC Barcelona condemns the events which have taken place in many parts of Catalonia today in order to prevent its citizens exercising their democratic right to free expression", the letter said.
"From there, all together, directors, executives and players met and we decided, exceptionally, to play the game behind closed doors".
Barcelona went on to win against Las Palmas by three goals to nil but football was the not on anyone's mind.
Had Barcelona refused to play the game altogether, it would have been deducted six points by La Liga.
The victory gave Barcelona a five-point lead over Sevilla, which defeated visiting Malaga 2-0 on Saturday.

Police hit people with batons, fired rubber bullets into crowds and forcibly removed would-be voters from polling stations in actions that were condemned internationally but described by the government as "proportionate". The match was played out in an echo-filled, empty stadium, filled with only the players on the field, the substitutes, team employees, and a few members of the press.
"He's not exhausted. He's missed a lot of games and he's very disappointed because he hasn't scored in La Liga yet, but that's football", Zidane added.
"We were aware of what was happening".
Their opponents, Las Palmas, inflamed tension in Catalonia ahead of the clash by adding a small Spanish flag to their jerseys to show their support for Spanish unity. "But, in place of calling the game off, we've chose to play it in an exceptional manner: without fans".
"It's a question which only comes up in the case of an independent Catalonia and we are not there yet", he said.
"We hope that everything will go back to how it was before, but I'm not a politician and I don't understand".
