Monty Hall Dies: Let's Make A Deal Host, Co-Creator Was 96

Calif. Former

Hall, who hosted the game show "Let's Make a Deal" for almost forty years over more than 4,700 episodes, died at the age of 96 on Saturday due to heart failure, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

"Let's Make a Deal" premiered in 1963 and quickly became a phenomenon.

Hall, born in Manitoba, Canada, on August 25, 1921, began his career as a stage actor in college.

A probability brain teaser was named after the game-show host.

Hall has stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Canada's Walk of Fame and the Palm Springs, California, Walk of Stars, and he received a lifetime achievement award from the Daytime Emmy Awards. It was rebooted with Wayne Brady as host in 2009, to which Hall gave his approval. He also appeared in and produced several other game shows, including Split Second, Chain Letter, Masquerade Party, 3 for the Money, It's Anybody's Guess, The Joke's on Us, What's This Song? and PDQ. When a People magazine interviewer suggested in 1996 that "Let's Make a Deal" would be his epitaph, Hall replied, with a wince: "You put that on my tombstone, and I'll kill you". Although he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and zoology from the University of Manitoba, it was the applause from college musicals that piqued his interest in acting and singing. The story the show sold you was that audience members wore costumes to attract Hall's attention - but everyone was dressed as a chicken, or a clown, or a cowboy. But bitten by the stage bug thanks to appearances in student shows, he left for NY.

"Do you want Door No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3?" had become the famous phrase of the game show, which had also allowed contestants to try their luck and winning a new auto.

Aside from the TV legacy that he left behind, the man is also survived by two daughters who continued on the same path as their father - TV executive Sharon Hall and Tony-award winning Gleason.
