Saudi Arabia Announces It Will Lift Ban And Allow Women To Drive

Women to be allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia

The structural racism in Saudi Arabia is all-pervasive, and it can be seen in the absence of non-Saudi women resident in Saudi Arabia being given a platform to discuss women's rights.

A royal decree signed by King Salman bin Abdulaziz has ended a policy that has been widely criticized worldwide as a human rights violation.

The Saudi ministers are now preparing the required reports and in less than 30 days the royal order should be implemented, entering into force by June 2018, writes the Saudi press.

Dr. Madawi al-Rasheed, a Saudi academic, congratulated the women activists in a tweet and wished for "political and civil rights and an elected government" to follow.

Until two days ago, Saudi Arabia was the only country in the world that banned women from driving without their father or husband in the vehicle or apply for a license without the legal permission of her guardian.

Saudi women rejoiced at their historic new freedom to drive on Wednesday, with some taking to the roads even though licences will not be issued for another nine months.

Saudi Arabia announced today that it will overturn a longstanding ban and allow women to drive.

Previously, women in the Gulf nation could be arrested for driving. But by lifting the driving ban, the regime has crossed a big threshold, both in the eyes of many Saudis and the world. "Women driving means great evils and this makes them especially sinful", one Riyadh-based Twitter user wrote.

While Saudi Arabia is moving in the right direction with this progressive reform, the fight for women's rights is far from over - not just in Saudi Arabia or the Middle East, but also across the globe.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has vowed to transform Saudi Arabia's economy, but it won't work unless he can also drag the country's medieval society into the modern era.

There has always been a seeming dismissal of poorer and non-Saudi women within the campaign.

But, at a small news conference at the Saudi Embassy in Washington, an exuberant Prince Khalid Salman, the Saudi ambassador, said women would be able to obtain driver's licences without having to ask permission from their husbands, fathers or any male guardian despite guardianship laws that give men power over their female relatives.

In a royal decree, the monarch directed minister of interior to constitute a high-level ministerial committee to carry out studies about the necessary arrangements to implement the royal decree.

Buti said that's not the case in neighboring Saudi Arabia.
