Twitter Ups Character Limit To 280

Twitter is testing a 280-character limit for tweets, doubling the current length restriction that's been in place since the company's founding 11 years ago.

Popular social networking service Twitter has finally made a decision to increase character limits of a tweet to 280, a test run for which has already begun. "But in English, a much higher percentage of tweets have 140 characters (9%)", the statement said.

"Our research shows us that the character limit is a major cause of frustration for people tweeting in English", the company's blog post said.

While the 280-character expansion isn't a done deal for everyone just yet, the move left some frequent tweeters wondering why the change - and why now?

Twitter is letting some of its users get a little chattier - allowing posts that are twice as long as the traditional 140 character messages.

A small change yet a big move for Twitter as Jack Dorsey explained it, he also said that Twitter will never lose its charm.

If brevity is the soul of wit, Twitter is about to get a lot less clever. English tweets consist of 34 characters on average. "It's what makes it such a great way to see what's happening", they wrote.

Twitter acknowledged the "emotional attachment" some users might have toward the 140 characters.

It looks like 140 character tweets might become a thing of the past. "But we tried this, saw the power of what it will do, and fell in love with this new, still brief, constraint".

TWITTER HAS begun a trial of 280 character tweets, double the traditional 140.

The original 140 character count was created to reflect the needs of the 160 characters of an SMS message, but with virtually no one tweeting this way anymore, the time has become right for a change.
