Death of soul singer Charles Bradley

R.I.P. Charles Bradley

Charles Bradley has passed away, an announcement on his various social media channels confirmed.

He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in October 2016, and received a clean bill of health earlier this year, before the cancer returned and spread to his liver.

Born in Florida, Bradley as a teenager in NY discovered soul legend James Brown at the Apollo Theater.

"I'm gonna say it's all right to dream, but work at it - make it come to reality", Bradley said after releasing his debut studio album, No Time for Dreaming, in 2011. In his 40s, he moved back to Brooklyn and began performing as James Brown impersonator under the name Black Velvet before being scouted by Gabriel Roth, a Daptone co-founder and recording engineer, though he continued to perform under the pseudonym while developing a career under his given name.

His third and last album, 2016's Changes, figured on several music magazines' lists of the year's top albums and, despite Bradley's Christian beliefs, featured a remake of occult-dabbling metal band Black Sabbath in its title song.

The singer's remarkable life story and extraordinary journey was captured in the documentary Charles Bradley: Soul of America, directed by Poull Brien in 2012.

All throughout he was a tireless and energetic performer, still channeling James Brown, but now with his own music. As he told us in an interview past year: "When you look at the expressions on the people's faces, and you can see some of your own life in their faces and the changes that some people are going through".

"When I come back, I'll come back strong, with God's love". That's why sometimes I like to go into the audience and just hug them, especially when I see someone hurting.

The soul singer died on Saturday after battling cancer, ET confirms.

Earlier in September, when announcing the tour's cancellation, a message attributed to Bradley on his social media accounts said: "I love all of you out there that made my dreams come true".

Bradley was an electrifying stage presence and had lived many lives before becoming an internationally successful soul singer late in life. "With God's will, I'll be back soon". Following that are other videos by him.
