Tara's Take: McAdoo takes his turn in the crosshairs

Eli Manning ready for fans to calm down after Giants loss

Matthew Stafford threw for two touchdowns and rookie Jamal Agnew broke the game open with an 88-yard punt return in the fourth quarter as the Detroit Lions beat the New York Giants 24-10 in the National Football League on Monday night. The Ravens, who had five sacks and intercepted four passes in Week 1 at Cincinnati, are the only team with at least four interceptions and three sacks in each of its first two games of a season since the sack became an official statistic in 1982. He simply can't continue to take the beating he's taken going back to past year. It doesn't get any easier for the Giants, either, not with road games against Philadelphia and Tampa Bay in the next two weeks. He looked lost in coverage a few times, and after he was beaten for 38 yards on a pass to Jerell Adams, he was replaced with rookie Jalen Reeves-Maybin.

No, Monday night against NY was something rarely seen from the Lions.

"Put this game on me", McAdoo said.

Matthew Stafford is making the leap from very good quarterback to a great franchise quarterback in front of our eyes. It's been a long time.

Over on the Lions' side, they're now 2-0 as well after victories over the Cardinals 35-23 in the opener and the Giants 24-10 on Monday.

Manning faced heavy pressure for most of the night.

"I think all across the board, the guys played tough and played well against a team that's very hard to beat", Lions coach Jim Caldwell said. We talk about the football team we have right now.

Manning threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Evan Engram, but the rookie tight end was called for unsportsmanlike conduct for a seemingly obscene gesture and it allowed the Lions to get the ball in good field position for Stafford to drive them down the field for the go-ahead score. But McAdoo said he will consider changes whenever he deems them necessary, including removing himself as the play caller.

"We have to come together and start playing for each other and start playing as a team, because right now, obviously we are just not playing up to our ability", said Pugh, who started the game at left guard and moved to right tackle when Bobby Hart injured his ankle two plays into the game. "Not going in the right direction enough, going backwards, not converting on third downs enough".

The defense forced a fumble in the second quarter, but Manning threw an interception on the next play.

The Giants trailed by 10 with about five minutes left in the third quarter but had a chance to get back in the game with the ball at the Lions' two-yard line on fourth and goal.

Fair criticism (and Manning agreed, telling reporters, "any time there's a delay of game, it's on the quarterback") but a little jarring to see a coach state so candidly. Instead, the Giants punted and the Lions returned the punt for a TD, blowing open their lead to 24-10.

Now New York, which went 11-5 last season and made the playoffs, needs to get its offense going in a hurry. "I said when we came into the season, this is the most talented team we had on paper, but you can't go out there and win on paper". "We've got to get to work". "We can do a better job". We have to handle the ball better. "We wanted to be smart with him in his first game back".
