India brandishes 'intelligence report' of Rohingyas' militant links

Meantime, police said on Monday that they had arrested a suspected member of al-Qaeda who they believed was trying to recruit Rohingya living in the country to fight security forces in Myanmar.

"As evident from the constitutional guarantee flowing from Article 19 of the Constitution, the right to reside and settle in any part of the territory of India as well as right to move freely throughout the territory of India is available only to the citizens of India".

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that a final decision on the fate of Rohingya refugees in India would be taken by the Supreme Court.

Numerous displaced have arrived with horrific tales of killings and rapes by Myanmar's security forces and Buddhist militias.

He asked the present dispensation to grant Rohingya Muslims the refugee status on the same lines India granted it to Tibetans, Afghans and Lankans.

Rejecting the view that Rohingiyas should be allowed to stay in India on humanitarian grounds, Madhav said the government was taking care of the "humanitarian interest" of the country's 1.3 billion people.

The Centre said India has not signed any worldwide treaty on refugees and was under no obligation to keep the Rohingyas, lakhs of whom have fled Myanmar over the past few weeks to escape a crackdown by government forces in the neighbouring country.

"As India has accommodated refugees coming from Tibet, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, issue of Rohingyas refugees should also be considered in the same spirit", he said. "In the five or six years that we have been here, we have never felt that we are foreigners here nor have we ever felt any kind of fear", said Salimullah ahead of the case. "They ran away from their country to save themselves from Myanmarese government".

A Rohingya insurgent group in Myanmar which claimed responsibility for recent attacks on police posts, the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, says it has no links to outside jihadi organizations.

Currently, they stopped issuing visas on arrival to prevent the entry of Muslims from Rakhine State who identify themselves as Rohingyas.

The hearing will continue next month. About 412,000 fled to Bangladesh, but some have also reached India, Nepal and Pakistan in recent weeks.
