This Illegal Piracy Site is "Borrowing" Visitors' Computers to Mine Cryptocurrency

The-Pirate-Bay

The past weekend, many The Pirate Bay visitors have noticed a rising in the CPU percentage usage when the person was browsing through pages of the website. They contacted The Pirate Bay and were informed by the website administrators that the miner was put in the website for a short period amounting to less than a day. But when you run a pirate website and provide access to films and a whole host of other copyrighted media to the masses, advertising is not a suitable source of revenue. The users of the site reported that they experienced unusual spikes in CPU usage and that they also found some javascript involved with the cryptocurrency mining. Upon closer examination, it was discovered that an embedded digital coin miner was to blame. Further investigation revealed that the mining code isn't deployed site-wide, just on the search results page and within category listings. However, this was later corrected so that the script only used between 20 and 30 percent of free CPU resources while visiting the site.

And that's exactly what Pirate Bay tried to do when it embedded a Javascript cryptocurrency miner to its site.

Whether this is a viable alternative to ad revenue or not, The Pirate Bay told TorrentFreak that they're testing it for 24 hours.

According to Filip Truta from Hot For Security, Coinhive uses Monero blockchain technology that users can run directly on their browsers and generate XMR for Pirate Bay in exchange for no ads. However, there are ways to avoid your computing power being gouged, for example, script blockers can stop the site running the JavaScript code to poach your CPU. They can also add Coinhive to the ad blocker's blacklist to keep it from running, notes Gizmodo. That really is serious, so hopefully we can get some action on it quickly. Do you want ads or do you want to give away a few of your CPU cycles every time you visit the site? According to reports, The Pirate Bay has taken to hijacking its users CPUs to mine cryptocurrency. Another way of blocking the miner is by blocking the URL of the miner with the use of an ad-blocker.
