Fortnite "configuration error" allowed cross-play between Xbox One and PS4

PlayStation 4 and Xbox One cross-platform play switched on in Fortnite, players report

In an email Epic said: "We had a configuration issue and it has now been corrected". Glixel reached out to Epic Games and it confirmed that while the crossplay did actually happen, it wasn't intentional. What's more is that the Reddit user switched to his Xbox One to look up zCypher Nine on Xbox's network, only to find that he/she did indeed exist there.

The debate is finally laid to rest when reddit user /u/PyroBlack76 posted a photo of a PS4 playing with an Xbox One side-by-side. The problem is, even for games like Minecraft and Rocket League that offer cross-play between PC, Xbox One, Nintendo systems, and mobile phones, Sony nearly never wants to play along.

Somehow, players are managing to play cross-platform, with anyone they want; something the game apparently, isn't created to do. PS4 players noticed it because Sony doesn't allow gamers to use spaces in their PSN usernames, while Microsoft does for Xbox Live gamertags.

Seeing as how this was just a "configuration issue", it raises the question as to how feasible it is for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users to play the same game with each other.

People playing Epic's Fortnite on consoles recently were surprised to discover a new feature had been quietly added to the game: the ability to play with gamers on other consoles. Immediately, he found the player, whose achievements indicated that he owned Fortnite.

With cross-platform play between the two consoles being so easy to implement that a developer manages to enable it it accidentally, hopefully, Microsoft and Sony will manage to negotiate a way for the feature to come to fruition in an official manner. "I don't know why that has to become the dialogue", he said.
