Roy Hodgson: 'Crystal Palace situation is painful'

Roy Hodgson's first game in charge of Crystal Palace ended in defeat

Born in Croydon, Hodgson spent three years on Palace's books as a young defender in the 1960s before leaving without making an appearance.

The Dutch manager was sacked after just 77 days in charge of the Eagles and now he has been replaced by Roy Hodgson.

And while Palace will surely show more faith in 70-year-old replacement Roy Hodgson, an experienced "safe pair of hands" appointed to guide the club through the mess rather than revolutionise their style of play, question marks will undoubtedly be asked if he too endured a hard start to life with the London club.

Other reports suggest that Hodgson could be given £40m to spend Crystal Palace in January as they look to climb out of the drop zone.

It took only six minutes for Southampton to expose the extent of the challenge Hodgson must overcome.

There were boos from the Palace crowd when Hodgson brought off Loftus-Cheek, his best player, for Bakary Sako with 15 minutes to go and the change did not work for his goal-shy team.

Palace face some respite from league action when they welcome Huddersfield Town in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, before heading to the Etihad for their next league game next Saturday.

Hodgson is now looking towards the upcoming fixtures - they have got games against Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea coming up - in the hope that Palace can start to build their confidence as a team and put Premier League points on the board.

'In those days I had dreams of playing for the team, then as a coach you think about coaching the team and a lot has happened in between.

After Everton's insipid and passionless performance in the Europa League on Thursday, Ronald Koeman spoke of fear preventing gifted players from expressing themselves and it feels like something very similar is happening at Crystal Palace. De Boer was relieved of his duties after he lost all four of the club's opening four Premier League games without scoring a single goal. "It's part of our job, football is sometimes efficiency, you have to convert these chances and I see the next game as the opportunity to keep improving".

While not all Palace fans have been impressed by the appointment of a manager whose England team struggled when under pressure, Hodgson said he was proud of his record, even if there were a few regrets.
