Dual Olympic Bids Approved For Paris And Los Angeles

All those in favour...IOC members confirm their agreement at a rubber-stamping event

It's official, Paris and Los Angeles have been confirmed as hosts for the 2024 and 2028 Olympics.

Paris and LA originally both bid for 2024 but after the withdrawal of Boston, Budapest, Hamburg and Rome the International Olympic Committee chose to secure the two strong bidders as future hosts.

The IOC decided in July to award both Games at the same time, following the withdrawal of four of the six cities bidding for the 2024 Olympics, amid concerns about the size, cost and complexity of organising the world's biggest multi-sports event.

The AP adds this will be the third Olympics for both cities, and the Los Angeles games will be the first Summer Olympiad in the USA since 1996.

There were no other candidates for either the 2024 or 2028 Games and the votes were a formality, IOC President Thomas Bach said the votes for both cities were "unanimous". After LA declared its candidacy for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games on July 31, the IOC Evaluation Commission compiled a supplementary analysis following further consultations with LA 2028 bid leaders and subject matter experts, and further written submissions. "We have the two best possible games for the Olympics in 2024 and 2028, in two great Olympic countries".

After the announcement, representatives from the two host cities, the IOC and President Bach signed official contracts for the Olympic Games, respectively. The IOC made a decision to award two games at the same time, and LA later abandoned its bid for 2024 during negotiations with the IOC and Paris.

International Olympic Committee chief Bach first signalled publicly that the double-award of an Olympics could be on the agenda in December a year ago, lamenting that the bidding process produced "too many losers". It seeks to streamline the Games, most notably by eliminating billion-dollar stadiums and infrastructure projects that have been underused, if used at all, once the Olympics leave town.

"L.A.is a city where the Games are not a barrier to making progress; we know that they are an accelerating force to re-envisioning a better city and a better world in the days ahead as we welcome you back to the City of Angels", he said, mentioning his 5-year-old daughter Maya, who will be 16 when the Olympics kick off in the city in 2028. The last time it hosted the games was in 1924.

It wasn't such a bad idea considering the news still seeping out about a bid scandal involving a Brazilian IOC member's alleged vote-selling to bring the 2016 Olympics to Rio de Janeiro.
