Over 100 Prison Inmates Escape Because Of Hurricane Irma

Necker Island is in the British Virgin Islands just north of Virgin Gorda

"We continue to work flat out to help the people who have suffered so much in the Caribbean, particularly of course in our overseas territories, in Anguilla, in the Turks and Caicos, and above all in the British Virgin Islands where there's been massive devastation", said Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

Duncan said 20 tonnes of United Kingdom aid has arrived in the oversea territories, where more than 500,000 British nationals, either residents or tourists, "have been in the path of Hurricane Irma, which has caused devastation across an area spanning well over 1,000 miles". Royal Marines were sent to "protect the Governor and everything else about law and order".

"We had a serious threat of a complete breakdown of law and order in the British Virgin Islands (BVI)", junior foreign minister Alan Duncan told parliament.

Sir Alan said: "Over 500,000 British nationals, either residents or tourists, have been in the path of Hurricane Irma, which has caused devastation across an area spanning well over 1,000 miles". Five people died and severe damage occurred on multiple islands.

"To be honest it just makes you think because the people who are out there, they're so limited, they don't have enough resources, they don't have enough help and the hurricane has been three days now, four days, and now they're just picking up the pieces, they're anticipating another one", Mr Ghafoor told Sky News.

The hurricane, which was later downgraded from a Category 5 to a Category 2 storm, also hit Florida, where another 12 people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced.

The Daily Telegraph reported British Cabinet notes leaked to the press said 40 prisoners were on the loose.

A photo of what is believed to be a British Cabinet briefing paper has now revealed that officials are attempting to "secure the transfer of the prisoners" to the island of St. Lucia.

"Our thoughts are with all the people and regions hit by Hurricane Irma, and all those in the U.S. communities now facing the storm".

'It is absolutely disgraceful that it has taken the whole day for Priti Patel to respond to the worst hurricane we have seen in a British territory since the 1920s, ' she said.

Partner of Briton Claudia Knight, who is now stranded on the island of Tortola, carries a knife for protection as "everyone's turned feral". She left Tortola before Hurricane Irma hit the island.
