Looping path may bring Hurricane Jose near Bahamas, US

Caicos before Irma

The storm, which followed Irma through the tropical Atlantic, was expected to spin back on itself, leaving some experts to believe the cooler water it had turned up previously would keep it weak for the short term, even dipping below hurricane-force over the next couple of days.

However, after Monday night, Jose may slam on the brakes hard, ceasing almost all forward motion, likely setting up a roller-coaster-like path that will take the storm in a series of loops, circles, dips and dives over for the entirety of next week.

With Irma diminishing to a tropical depression, a hurricane-battered nation could soon shift its attention to Hurricane Jose, now meandering around the western Atlantic Ocean roughly 300 miles northeast of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Fortunately, over the weekend, Jose only brushed the islands of the Caribbean that had been slammed by Irma, such as Barbuda, Antigua and the Virgin Islands.

Speaking to The Tribune yesterday, local Meteorology Department forecaster Ian McKenzie said Jose's three-day cone has it located to the east of The Bahamas in a projected looping motion.

Jose was packing 85 m.p.h. winds - a category one storm - and was expected to remain a category one storm when it inches closer to land.

Jose is now located about 400 miles north of the northern Leeward Islands and is moving northwest.

The latest European model shows Jose circling around the west Atlantic for much of the upcoming week.

Jose already has threatened other hurricane-weary countries.

The full hurricane season lasts until November 30, although the peak season generally stretches from about mid-August to mid-October.
