Gillibrand joins train of Dem 2020 hopefuls backing Medicare-for-all

Sen. Booker co-sponsoring Bernie Sanders' 'Medicare for all' bill - NJTV

Democrats are also worrying over whether placating Sanders' far-left, anti-establishment supporters will alienate moderate Democrats to such a degree that it will be impossible to gain congressional majorities in 2018 and the presidency in 2020.

Booker's announcement comes after other high-profile Democrats said they would cosponsor the bill.

This is about as far from a coincidence as you can get.

Pelosi made it clear that her distance from the bill, which Sanders expects to unveil with top progressives this week, creating something of a litmus test for Democrats, had little to do with its contents. All three are speculative candidates for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. He joins fellow Democrats Cory Booker, D-N.J., Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Kamala Harris, D-Calif., in support of Sanders' legislation.

It also seems to confirm that these senators have clear designs on running. "We're getting there. It's going to happen". "We do. It's important though that that health care be patient-centered and not government-centered". Max Baucus (D-MT) said last week that he also supports a single-payer system.

Manchin is maybe the least likely Democrat to even flirt with single-payer. "I think, right now, he wants to be the rational and reasonable voice of the progressive wing of the Democratic party".

Tester is hardly the only Democrat to resist this debate.

After former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was selected as the Democratic nominee for president in 2016, numerous voters who had backed Sanders in the primary were skeptical of her progressive chops. Conservatives warned that Obamacare was always a stepping stone towards a single-payer system.

"The only long-term solution to America's health care crisis is a single-payer national health care program", said Sanders. "It would be terrific to have a simple, seamless system where, exclusively by virtue of living in America, you know that you will get the care you need". Vox added last week Murphy "casts his bill as an on-ramp to single-payer".

In other words: The writing is on the wall. Democratic activists believe the GOP's failed attempt to repeal Obamacare has strengthened the resolve of the nation's leftists. Mr. Sanders has always been a champion of single-payer healthcare, and it was a central tenet of his 2016 presidential campaign.

And the way things are going, soon no Democratic leader will be able to oppose single-payer.

Expect this to continue apace in the days and weeks ahead.
