To the 61 increase in the number of victims of the natural disaster that occurred yesterday near the coast of Mexico.

The quake had struck the Southern Coast of Mexico on Thursday, and completely destroyed over 420 houses as well as damaged almost 2,000 houses.

At least 61 people have died after the most powerful quake to hit Mexico in a century struck off the southern coast, toppling houses, damaging hospitals and government offices, and sparking mass evacuations. "Several houses were destroyed, and we are still looking for people among the rubble", he said.

Schools have been closed in Mexico City and Chiapas in preparation, and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto tweeted that he was in contact with the country's centre for disaster prevention.

Meanwhile storm Katia made landfall in the east as a Category One hurricane and hours later was downgraded to a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 45 miles (70 kilometers) per hour.

Quake lights have been reported around the world for decades - with some claiming it's a natural phenomenon, and others claiming it's due to structural damage. Forecasters were predicting the storm could unleash upwards of 25 inches (64 centimeters) of rain in some areas.

Authorities warn of the possible appearance of a new strong aftershocks.

One of the worst hit towns was Juchitán, in Oaxaca, where at least 17 deaths were reported.

The 8.2-magnitude quake was felt by about 50 million people across the country.

Mysterious green and blue flashes were seen by witnesses in Mexico City after it was rocked by a magnitude 8.2 quake.

Now, with suspected three-metre-high waves, a tsunami warning has been issued to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras.

Mexico sits atop five tectonic plates, making it prone to earthquakes, and has two long coastlines that are frequently battered by hurricanes.
