South Korea's Moon says he and Putin share understanding on North Korea

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in said Thursday they saw the Trump administration as willing to solve the North Korean crisis through diplomacy.

Moon and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, in talks on the sidelines of the forum, said earlier they had agreed to step up pressure on North Korea, Kyodo said, as the reclusive state pushes ahead with its nuclear and missile programmes.

"Our efforts will continue to produce even further results that will lead to specific benefits for both sides", Abe said at a joint news conference with Putin on September 7.

He said the United Nations should take "necessary measures", but added that sanctions and pressure should spur negotiation between the sides towards the goal of a peaceful solution on the Korean peninsula.

Jung said the time has arrived for Seoul to consider an "all-out" change to its North Korea policy. "Ideally it should've been done before the temporary deployment, but with the recent missile and nuclear threats from North Korea, it seems the government had no choice but to rush deployment".

The leaders of South Korea and Japan have repeated their calls for stronger action to punish North Korea over its recent nuclear tests. The yen strengthened on Lee's remarks.

Seoul has already begun preparing for the possibility of such a missile targeting South Korean territory, with the government abruptly announcing that it had allowed the installation of new launchers, part of the US -provided Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile system.

Beijing says the system's powerful radars will be able to monitor flights and missile launches deep inside north-eastern China.

Bloomberg's Isabel Reynolds reports on the latest on tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

On coming to power in May, Moon opposed the early installation of the shield.

US President Donald Trump has urged China, North Korea's biggest ally and trading partner, to do more to rein in its neighbor.

The South Korean President reportedly told Putin that the concerned parties "must intensify the severity of the UN Security Council sanctions more to bring the North to the path of dialogue".

"Russia exports very little amount of petroleum to the north which is about 40,000 tons a year".

Russian Federation and China both share a border with North Korea. "With the deployment of the four launchers, the US military secured the field operation capability of one Thaad battery".

There were 2.3 million fewer Chinese tourists in the five months through July from the same period past year.

On Saturday, North Koreans will celebrate the anniversary of their country's founding, and experts believe they may mark the holiday with a full-range test of an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Mr Moon and Mr Abe agreed to co-operate on seeking tougher United Nations sanctions against North Korea and pledged to strengthen efforts to persuade Beijing and Moscow to cut off oil supplies to the North, said Mr Moon's press secretary.

On Wednesday, Washington demanded an oil embargo on Pyongyang and a freeze on the foreign assets of its leader Kim Jong-Un in a dramatic bid to force an end to the perilous nuclear stand-off.

The U.N. Security Council is expected to vote on a new set of sanctions soon. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke for 45 minutes Wednesday. "If we do use it on North Korea, it will be a very sad day for North Korea".

"It's impossible to scare them", said Putin.
