Hurricane Irma: FPL staged to restore power; some already without power

Rob Gould, vice president and chief communications officer of Florida Power & Light talks about trying to restore power in between feeder bands.

All other Central Florida counties have 30 or less customers without power.

As Hurricane Irma's winds and thunderstorms swept through South Florida on Saturday, almost 194,000 homes and businesses in the tri-county region lost power, according to Florida Power & Light.

"It's hard to speculate, but some of the estimates could be 5 million people without power based on this, you know, south-to-north trajectory, and it's not just Florida; it's going to be moving into Georgia as well. over the next five days", Long said.

FPL chose to shut only one of the two reactors at its Turkey Point nuclear plant on Saturday because the storm track shifted, and plans to leave both reactors at the St Lucie plant in service because hurricane force winds are no longer expected to hit the sites. "We have to be ever vigilant", Gould said. Scott said Saturday night that the outages expected to grow as Irma moves closer to the state.

Hurricane Irma: FPL staged to restore power; some already without power

One of Florida's primary public utility companies said Saturday that it is preparing to deal with the largest number of power outages in US history.

FPL plowed almost $3 billion into smart grid technologies and stronger infrastructure, which helped the state utility limit the damage from last year's Hurricane Matthew, but the wind gusts from Irma could prove more challenging, according to McGrath.

But Florida Power and Light say they're ready.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Hundreds of thousands of people are without power in Florida as Hurricane Irma's winds and rain lash the state.

FPL did announce Friday that it plans to shut down its two nuclear power plants - Turkey Point in Homestead and St. Lucie Nuclear Plant near Fort Pierce - 24 hours before hurricane-force winds hit the area and throughout the storm.
