What has happened to Aung San Suu Kyi?

Myanmar's Rohingya Crisis Escalates

But what some have called "ethnic cleansing" and others "a slow genocide" has persisted - and recently accelerated.

There are several certainties - the scale of devastation can be seen from space.

More than 125,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled west toward Bangladesh following the worst wave of violence in Rakhine since communal conflict broke out in the region in 2012.

There are fears of an unprecedented boat exodus.

"No-one told me that I was to be interviewed by a Muslim", Suu Kyi is alleged to have said, according to the petition.

"It is not possible to strip a Nobel Peace Prize laureate of his or her award once bestowed", Mr Njolstad said.

Calls for the prize to be rescinded from the likes of Barack Obama and Henry Kissinger have fallen similarly flat.

When Suu became the de facto leader in Myanmar (after her party, National League of Democracy had a landslide victory in the 2015 general elections) our elation knew no bound. The Myanmar army has been accused of launching a violent campaign since 25 August, when Rohingya insurgents killed 12 police. The military has near-unanimous support.

But the Trump administration is neither readying sanctions nor levying real pressure on Suu Kyi's government.

Accusing Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar's of disgracing noble prize, AIP chief and MLA Lagate Er Rasheed Thursday ridiculed her claim that "Myanmar is facing the same situation what India is facing in Kashmir".

The Mu'min Believer Organisation has launched a petition to take Myanmar's defacto ruler Aung San Suu Kyi to the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the genocide of Rohingya Muslims.

In April, Myanmar appointed former United Nations chief Kofi Annan to lead its own probe into possible crimes in Rakhine. "It goes back to pre-colonial times".

"Many more children in need of support and protection remain in the areas of northern Rakhine State that have been wracked by violence", he said in a statement, adding that the United Nations refugee agency had no access to trouble spots in northern Rakhine state. The Burmese army is letting few outsiders into the northern part of Rakhine state, near the border with Bangladesh, so it is hard to be certain about the scale of the atrocities.

The Rohingya are a minority group largely based in Rakhine.

A significant troop build-up had been underway in the weeks prior to the attacks, as tensions mounted.

State Department officials, however, say they've been in regular contact with Myanmar's government, primarily through USA envoy Scot Marciel.

Ms Suu Kyi has attracted criticism from around the world for failing to speak out about the violence. The military remains politically powerful and oversees security operations, but Suu Kyi is still seen by Washington as key to sustaining civilian rule and eventually addressing the Rohingya's long-term grievances.

"If the political price of your ascension to the highest office in Myanmar is your silence, the price is surely too steep", Tutu said in a statement. A country that is not at peace with itself, that fails to acknowledge and protect the dignity and worth of all its people, is not a free country.

But Murphy was careful not to directly criticize the country's civilian government, led by Suu Kyi, which he said represents the "best opportunity in generations for Burma to get on the right track" - referring to the country by its colonial-era name.

With mechanisms such as punitive economic sanctions having been discarded, a UN Peacekeeping mission not even on the table, and any resolution in the UN Security Council likely to be blocked by China or Russian Federation, the global community's response to the escalating Rohingya crisis is in disarray.

Analysts blame Myanmar's government for the conditions that led to the group's creation.
