OIC to hold special session in Astana over Rohingya crisis

Myanmar violence Over 1.4 lakh Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh says United Nations

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the de facto leader of Myanmar and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate for her long struggle against military rule, has come under increasing global criticism for the plight of the Rohingya.

The Rohingya have always been subjected to discrimination in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, which denies them citizenship.

The IRGC further said "the displacement of over 100,000 people and the carnage of at least 400 oppressed and defenseless Myanmar Muslims have sparked the outrage of the Muslim world and increased the responsibility of the Myanmar government in the face of this tragic incident".

A BBC correspondent on a government-chaperoned trip to Rakhine reported Thursday that he saw Rakhine Buddhist men walking from an unoccupied Rohingya village that had just caught fire.

Al-Azhar, the world's top Muslim Sunni institution, said Friday that it would lead humanitarian efforts on an worldwide level to stop the massacre, genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

Myanmar rejects this, saying its military is fighting against Rohingya "terrorists".

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry says it has summoned Myanmar's ambassador to protest violence against the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar's Rakhine state.

Five Rohingya shot dead in Myanmar have been buried in Bangladesh at a mass funeral attended by hundreds of people after their relatives carried their bodies across the border, police said on Thursday.

The Rohingya comprise some 1.1 million people and are seen by many in Buddhist-majority Myanmar as illegal migrants from Bangladesh.

The report found evidence of human rights violations by security forces that indicated crimes against humanity.

Around 270,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled since August 25 when militant attacks sent unrest churning through Rakhine, arriving in Bangladesh hungry and exhausted and squashing into already overcrowded refugee camps.

The attacks have been intensified since August 25, with State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi ignoring global demands to call off the violence.

"Rakhine state is on the precipice of a humanitarian disaster", she added. "It is creating a lot of problem for the country", an official in the Bangladesh High Commission said.

The rally was partly organised by protest group Gonojagoron Mancha, whose leaders said they plan to besiege Myanmar's embassy in Dhaka on Monday if the government does not take action.

"We are asking for a safe access to be able to meet a large amount of humanitarian needs, including emergency food supplies, safe drinking water, transportation for the families to a safer area", he said.
