Backed forces kick off offensive against ISIS in Syrian city

A USA -backed Syrian force says it has launched military operations against the Islamic State group in eastern Syria, heightening the possibility of conflict with rival, Russian-backed government forces, which are running their own operations in the same area.

Russia's Defense Ministry said the strike was carried out in eastern Syria after an intelligence report showed top Islamic State commanders were meeting at a secret underground command post.

This week, Syrian troops and their Iranian-backed allies reached Deir el-Zour, breaking a almost three-year-old IS siege on government-held parts of the city in a major breakthrough in their offensive against IS. Deir Ezzor is largely still held by ISIS forces.

The Syrian Democratic Forces, a US-backed alliance of Arab and Kurdish fighters, launched a new operation against the terrorist group in the north of the Deir al-Zor province.

Syrian government forces and their allies reached Deir al-Zor military airport on the other side of the Euphrates, where troops had been holed up since 2014, surrounded by Islamic State, the commander in the pro-Assad alliance said.

Teym field produced gas and oil and is one of the most important energy fields in Syria as it supports the electricity production to most Syrian cities.

On September 7, the government forces took a strategic bridge over the Euphrates to the northeast of Deir ez-Zor.

"To ensure the safe de-escalation of efforts to defeat ISIS, coalition surveillance aircraft departed the adjacent airspace at the request of Russian official during their assault on Deir Ezzor", the US Central Command said in a statement.

The Russian announcement comes a day after the US-led coalition, who are also attacking IS from the skies over Syria, announced they had "removed" senior members of the group from the battlefield.

The U.S. -trained Deir al-Zour Military Council said it was calling its operation Jazeera Storm.

"Effective actions of the Russian Aerospace Forces made it possible to speed up the unblocking of the city of Deir Ezzor and allow the Syrian troops to start its immediate liberation", Moscow said in a statement.

A Russian Federation - which backs the Syrian regime - and the U.S. made an agreement in 2015, to see province separated into two areas of operation to prevent accidental clashes between the two sides.

"We will continue to deconflict as necessary and as required", Dillon said while speaking to reporters in Washington during a teleconference briefing from Baghdad.

The source claimed that all of those killed or detained were IS "supporters" and said that they were intending to flee to neighbouring Afghanistan, but did not offer their evidence.
