Flipkart, Amazon ready their battle rooms for the big sales season

Also, they are calming that users will get to avail 90 percent discounts on products across all categories.

While specific products or brands, which will be a part of this sale, have not been mentioned by the company, Flipkart says that it will provide customers with various financing options. The Bengaluru-based firm sold 15.5 million products during last year's BBD. The first salvo has already been fired by Flipkart, which has announced its flagship sale Big Billion Days starting from September 20 to 24.

In an interview on Friday, Amazon India chief Amit Agarwal said the company had ramped up its capabilities since last year's Diwali season sale, adding that its American parent will continue to invest heavily in India in the near term and help expand the online retail market in the country. Amazon India did not confirm the dates. These annual festive events typically set the tone for the following year with a significant bumpup in sales.

That would imply that Flipkart is aiming to touch sales of around Rs 6,000-9,000 crore (about $1-1.5 billion) during the five-day event this year.

Flipkart has formed exclusive partnership with brands in fashion, consumer electronics & durables, and smartphones for the sale. On the first day offer will be extended on fashion, accessories, small and large appliances, home furnishing along with other categories. "Both companies have had their smartphone-exclusive offerings. You can not completely walk away from discounting, but the overall offering is what makes it a very compelling offer for the customer to buy on Flipkart", added Ravichandran. This e-commerce site will also give the EMI option on debit cards across the different banks for its customers. Notably, the festive season this year begins from September as opposed to October last year, bringing the flagship sales from two online shopping giants one month earlier this month.

Also, unlike a year ago, when Flipkart was under tremendous pressure to pull off a successful BBD in order to raise more funds, the Bengaluru-based online retailer finds itself in a position of strength with enough financial firepower to keep Amazon at bay. Flipkart has launched a host of new features to take on Amazon, including buy-now-pay-later, EMI for debit card purchases.
