Bungie Responds to Destiny 2 Fan Criticism Over Shaders

Bright Engrams for Silver

But thing have changed in Destiny 2, and now they're far harder to find. It has to do with something called "shaders". As players polish off the campaign and enter into the endgame stage of Destiny 2, they will need more reasons to come back to the game, with shaders being one of those.

The second is via opening Bright Engrams, Destiny 2's loot chests, and crossing your fingers for a little help from RNJesus. Maybe you wanted a yellow hue instead of a blue one (or whatever else). Now, shaders are consumables that disappear on use. As players note, they feel slightly betrayed as the sequel offers plenty of quality of life improvements while this change feels like a slimy way to drive up microtransactions.

In Destiny, one of the possible cosmetic items players could receive obtain was a shader which could be applied to a set of armor to change its color scheme and pattern.

One of the most shared elements of the original Destiny had to be the emote system, which took off over time and eventually added in actions and dances that aped popular culture, from Thriller to Hotline Bling. The bottom line, at least from where we're sitting, is that the previous system has been butchered in order to bolster the appeal of Destiny 2's bright engram microtransactions.

Smith also makes it clear that Bungie wants the shaders, which are exclusive to different destinations and activities in the game, to be an extra driving force to encourage players to be playing more activities on a regular basis. And that move has led fans to believe that the entire system was changed from the first game as a means of increasing sales of shaders in the in-game store. Now, all that remains to be seen is whether Bungie will listen.

Shaders in Destiny 2 are consumable single-use items. While players are able to acquire shaders by accomplishing tasks and defeating enemies in game, they can also spend Silver (the game's premium currency, which can be purchased with real world money) to buy Bright Engrams, which feature a wide variety of items, including shaders.
