Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy resigns amid speculation of a Cabinet reshuffle

Cabinet Reshuffle List of Ministers Who Quit and Top Contenders For Key Ministries

Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy resigned on Thursday ahead of cabinet reshuffle.

Though the two men had met the previous week, at this session, Mr Rudy was politely told to quit; he was assured his services will be used by the party as it campaigns for crucial states.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is likely to be divested of the Defence Ministry portfolio, of which he is holding additional charge.

Existing ministers Dharmendra Pradhan (petroleum) and Piyush Goyal (power), who have independent charge of their respective ministries, may be elevated to Cabinet positions. Rudy's exit from the ministry has come just when reports of a cabinet-reshuffle-cum-expansion are getting stronger.

New faces are likely to be inducted into the cabinet, including some from alliance partners like the ruling regional Janata Dal (United) party of the eastern state of Bihar.

A reshuffle will help the Narendra Modi government weed out the dead wood from the government and infuse new blood in the cabinet.

After Prabhu offered his resignation last week, Prime Minister Modi reportedly asked him to continue till he takes decision in the matter.

BJP President Amit Shah, who is likely to be in Vrindavan for the next three days to attend an RSS coordination meet, on Thursday held meetings with some ministers and senior party leaders.

A cabinet reshuffle has been on the cards since Manohar Parrikar resigned as Defence Minister to become Chief Minister of Goa. Five junior ministers were also dropped. Kalraj Mishra, who is past the unofficial age ceiling of 75 years to serve in the government, is tipped to be headed for a gubernatorial assignment.

Rudy has even announced that the ministry will be stripping the NSDC of its task of implementing its flagship skill schemes.

Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan is holding additional charge of the Environment portfolio following the death of Anil Madhav Dave in May.
