Bucs trade JJ Wilcox to Steelers for 2018 sixth-round pick

Best Available: NFL Names to Watch As Teams Look to Sign Cut Players

Steelers GM Kevin Colbert has been so busy in the past week, he likely barely had time to sign his two-year contract extension with the team.

The Steelers sent a sixth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to the Buccaneers for Wilcox and a seventh-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

In Wilcox, the Steelers get a reliable third safety with starter's experience. Ward had been scheduled to make a non-guaranteed $4.5 million with the Broncos in the final year of the four-year contract he signed in 2014 but was cut after three seasons.

The Cleveland Browns selected Ward as the No. 38 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and quickly emerged as one of the league's best safeties.

The veterans safety reportedly signed a one year deal worth up to $5 million with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Steelers will have to make a cooresponding roster move to make room for Wilcox on their roster. Wilcox lost his starting job in 2016 to first-round pick Byron Jones after he had started the previous two seasons for the Cowboys.

Pittsburgh acquiring Wilcox gives the team 54 active roster players, plus Le'Veon Bell, who does not count against the roster until he signs his franchise tag tender. The move created a roster spot for safety T.J. The Steelers now have just two healthy safeties, Sean Davis and Robert Golden on their roster.
