United States and South Korea to Conduct Military Exercises on August 21-31

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said that its neighbor is crossing the red line with these tests. However, the USA has no plans to stop the military exercises and does not believe the dictator of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, would stop building his arsenal of weapons.

The US military describes the software behind the drills as "state-of-the-art wargaming computer simulations".

As part of the exercises, imagery from military satellites orbiting above the Korean peninsula, is at times used to peer deep into North Korea, said a former South Korean government official who declined to be identified.

"You can expand a certain area to see what troops are in what sort of status and where they will move", said Park. North Korea considers the drills a preparation to invade the country.

North Korea has termed the decision to hold the exercise a "catastrophe".

Yonhap News Agency quoted a South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff official telling a press briefing, that "This year's military drills will be similar in size to those conducted last year".

During the last Ulchi-Freedom Guardian drills, the North and South exchanged fire after two South Korean soldiers were severely injured by a landmine in the DMZ, which the South said was planted by North Korean infiltrators the night before.

Provocative language has been in the air between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the US, with US President Donald Trump trading threats with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Tensions rose further between the USA and North Korea when the rogue nation said it conducted two successful ICBM tests in late July.

After a week of high tensions, Pyongyang also stated leader Kim Jong Un would "monitor" the United States before taking unprecedented measures against Guam, the location of a key USA air force base.
