Trump criticizes removal of Confederate monuments

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is calling for the removal of Confederate statues from the U.S. Capitol.

Sen. Cory Booker plans to propose a bill to remove all Confederate statues from the United States Capitol building, he announced Wednesday.

Trump doubled down on Thursday morning, lamenting that the removal of the "beautiful" monuments would ruin the "history and culture" of the U.S.

As Democratic leaders threw their support Thursday behind a proposal to take down any statue connected with the Confederacy, President Trump wondered where they would draw the line. "We have much work to do".

Pelosi's request comes after fellow Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson of MS called on lawmakers in both parties "to work with me to ensure the permanent removal of all offensive and despicable Confederate imagery" from the Capitol, Politico reported.

Among the statues present are of those of Gen. Robert E. Lee, Virginia; Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America, Mississippi; and Alexander Hamilton Stephens, the Confederate vice president, Georgia.

Almost 10 Confederate-era figures, including that of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy, and General Robert E Lee, a General who fought for the pro-slavery Confederacy during the US Civil War, are memorialised along with dozens of other statues at the National Statuary Hall Collection in the US Capitol.

The statues include a 75-foot tall confederate monument, a statue honoring the Women of the Confederacy and their sacrifices and a statue showing Henry Lawson Wyatt, the first confederate soldier to die in battle.

Officials in places like North Carolina and Kentucky have spoken out publicly against Confederate monuments, saying they want some statues removed.

Several Texas lawmakers requested a similar review of Confederate markers following the 2015 shooting of nine black churchgoers in SC.

"The year 1898 was a year of tremendous white supremacist violence against African Americans in an attempt, a successful attempt to destroy black influence on politics", said NCCU History Professor Jerry Gershenhorn. It replaced a statue of a former OH governor a year ago.

He also warned that if statues of Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson were removed, tributes to Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who were slave owners, could be next.

"It's time for Florida lawmakers to call a special session to replace Florida's Confederate statue in our nation's Capitol", Wasserman Schultz said.
