Amber Heard pokes fun at Barnaby Joyce over dual citizenship

Labor and key independents are demanding Barnaby Joyce stand down from cabinet and the leadership until his fate

Last night, another senior minister, National Party deputy leader Senator Fiona Nash, announced she was a dual British citizen and therefore potentially disqualified from sitting in parliament. "I'm getting text messages from journalists because I think one of major parties is trying to say I'm a British citizen by virtue of my father".

"Malcolm Turnbull needs to explain why he is holding Mr Joyce and now Senator Nash to a lesser standard than Matt Canavan and not requiring them to stand down".

Senator Nash said she made her own inquiries with the UK Home Office on Monday, following Barnaby Joyce's statement regarding his citizenship.

In response to the latest polling showing Labour leader Jacinda Arden catching up to Prime Minister Bill English as preferred Prime Minister going into September's election, Mr Joyce said the election's become a "contest of ideas".

A third Australian government minister has been caught up in the dual citizenship crisis that has rocked the country's parliament, with Nationals senator Fiona Nash admitting she is a British citizen by descent.

The obscure rule was little known until recently but it has major implications for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's Liberal-National coalition government, which hold a slim one-seat majority in Parliament's lower house.

It looks like it might be an easier task to list the Australian politicians who are NOT now embroiled in citizenship drama, as yet another one fell victim to the affliction that has taken down so many MPs over the past month. The remainder of the politicians who may be in breach of the Constitution are from the Senate.

His father was born in New Zealand.

The country's High Court has its first hearing on the matter set down for 24 August, and is expected to decide by December.

Xenophon confirmed he would not step down from the Senate, as his former colleagues Larissa Waters and Scott Ludlam did when their dual citizenships of Canada and New Zealand respectively were confirmed, but would wait for a High Court judgement.

Nash's case illustrates how far section 44 (i) can reach.

It also does not endanger the government's majority because she sits in the Senate.

Australian Conservatives senator Cory Bernardi has suggested suspending the Parliament.
