Trump attacks Lindsey Graham over Charlottesville violence comments

White Supremacists Praise Trump's Return To Rhetoric Blaming 'Both Sides'

Heyer, 32, was killed Saturday when she was struck by a vehicle driven into the crowd by an OH man allegedly with far-right views who now faces multiple criminal charges, including second-degree murder. Lindsey Graham of a "disgusting lie" for saying the president drew a "moral equivalency" between white supremacists and those who protested them.

Several minutes later, Trump tweeted again: "The public is learning (even more so) how dishonest the Fake News is".

Shortly before Graham's statement Thursday, the President accused the South Carolina Republican of lying about his response to Charlottesville.

"Such a disgusting lie", Trump continued.

Trump called the statement, "such a disgusting lie", adding "He just can't forget his election trouncing. The people of SC will remember!" David Shulkin, US secretary of Veterans Affairs, said on Wednesday that as a Jewish American, he was "outraged" by neo-Nazis and other white supremacists and felt obligated to speak out against them.

Early this morning, CNN published an astonishing letter by former CIA Director John Brennan that said President Trump was not only a "national disgrace" but that he was "putting our national security and our collective futures at grave risk". "For the sake of our nation - as our President - please fix this", Graham tweeted August 17, according to CNN.

Yet he returned to his combative stance on Tuesday - insisting anew that "both sides" were to blame.

Trump also went after the media for what he said was "misrepresenting" his comments about "hate, bigotry, etc".

Graham responded to the president Thursday by pleading with Trump for more forceful leadership on the issue.

Other Republicans, including the most powerful in Congress, have been making strong statements on Charlottesville and racism, but few have been mentioning Trump himself. Senator Lindsey Graham from SC, a former Republican candidate for President himself, was no exception.

"What about the alt-left that came charging in-excuse me-what about the alt-left that came charging at the, as you say, the alt-right?" Anything less will enable a white supremacist takeover of the Republican Party.

Graham praised Trump for his condolences to the family of Heather Heyer, the counter protester who was killed August 12, but was critical of the lingering effects of his message, particularly his choice to put blame on both sides. And when a conservative Republican senator from the first state to secede from the Union has to warn the president that "history is watching", that is not good news.
