A cashier right, sells a Powerball lottery ticket to a patron in Chicago on January 8, 2016. The Illinois Lottery urges the victor to immediately sign the back of the ticket and keep it in a safe place until he or she visits one of the lottery's five price centers: Springfield, Fairview Heights, Chicago, Des Plaines or Rockford.

While one of the largest jackpots in history, it is still far shy of the record: $1,586,400,000. If you choose the cash, then you get the cash, pay the tax, and can invest what is left over.

Tickets sales have roared in the past once such gargantuan figures like Thursday's $510 million were reached in either of the country's two multi-state lotteries.

Powerball is played in 44 states, as well as Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
