BMW Z4 Roadster Concept Is Out and Looks Better Than Imagined

BMW Z4 Concept 830x554

BMW has reminded fans that a new roadster concept will be unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The indicator units point diagonally toward the kidney grille from above.

Aside that imposing front grille, the headlights have been given an angrier look for a true shark-like face. At the rear, domes stretch out towards the back in order to integrate the rollover bars and give the roadster a sportier derriere. We see no pictures of the top, but it is supposed to be a soft top this time around instead of a retractable hard top, which should help cut weight.

For the Z4 Concept's designers, a clamshell bonnet was important in order to curve the bodywork over the wheels, creating a virtually seamless sweep over the front end as a whole. A BMW insider says canvas-tops can now be developed to offer cruising refinement level almost as well when driving roof-up.

Towards the rear of the auto the visual fest continues with sharp creases running from the fender to the rear of the vehicle to emphasis the Z4's new muscular haunches.

Inside the Z4 concept's interior is dominated by a large center mounted screen and the instrument cluster looks like it's fully digital.

Nope, as BMW hasn't discussed it about either.

The new Z4 was co-developed by Toyota as part of a design partnership between the German and Japanese auto manufacturers. It appears BMW is aiming wider and lower for the new Z4; the previewed prototype features a flat hood, wide wheel arches and a wide stance. While the current Z4 has top-to-bottom two-tone finishes, this one has left-to-right, signaling a more driver-focused design.

Set to do battle with cars like the Audi TT and the Porsche 718 Boxster, the big changes over the outgoing model is the new Z4 will ditch its retractable hardtop for a lighter fabric folding roof.

At launch, there will be three versions of the new Z4: 181bhp and 248bhp 2.0-litre turbos, badged sDrive20i and sDrive30i, and a turbocharged 3.0-litre that will carry the M40i moniker and is rumoured to produce 355bhp.

We know what you're about to ask, but a potential 400hp-plus Z4 M is unlikely, according to sources familiar with the matter.
