Utah's 3rd District special election

PM ET Utah GOP Special Election Candidates Back Vid Angel Say they ought to be able to filter content in their homes

Despite that support, Curtis has faced questions about his conservative credentials.

Curtis also touted his local support, his volunteers, and his campaign's efforts to keep from going negative.

November 7: The special election to succeed Chaffetz, with the victor serving out the remainder of the term until 2018, took place. "But tomorrow we go to work". Bob Bennett, in the November special 3 District election. "But his record doesn't look almost as good". Ainge's father denies any coordination between the group and the campaign.

"We did not get the outcome we started seeking, but we had a great campaign", Ainge said.

John Curtis pulled off the win despite being dogged by attack ads in a race whose three candidates were emblematic of the divisions roiling the GOP under President Donald Trump.

Information for this article was contributed by Brady McCombs of The Associated Press.

Wilkins said he voted for Herrod because he seems straightforward, whether or not what he's saying is popular. "It's too early to call".

Multiple polls conducted before the election gave Curtis an edge over his opponents in the special election primary, but undecided voter numbers in those polls was also high, making the race anybody's game.

Both Herrod and Ainge, as well as their super PAC allies, have taken special aim at what they consider Curtis' most egregious political sin: His past registration as a Democrat, made ahead of an unsuccessful challenge to a sitting Republican state legislator in 2000. Twenty-six percent of participants in that poll said they were undecided.

The race has become something of a proxy battle between well-known conservatives.

Curtis will face Democratic nominee Kathie Allen, a physician selected at a party convention, as well as Jim Bennett, the son of the late GOP senator Robert F. Bennett, who is among several third-party candidates running in the November 7 general election. "He has stayed pretty positive".

Out-of-state organizations and political action committees have spent about $900,000 in Utah's race - on top of about $600,000 in campaign contributions collected by the three Republicans running for Utah's 3rd Congressional District.

Utah County, which encompasses 60% of the population of the 3rd Congressional District, is expected to provide more complete numbers on Friday when provisional ballots and remaining mail-in ballot results are released.

Herrod won the endorsements of conservative Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, by a wide margin.

As of this writing, Herrod has not conceded, although Curtis has claimed victory. Because Utah law allows multiple paths to the ballot, Curtis gathered more than 15,000 signatures to still secure a place in the Republican primary.

Ainge had entered the race as a political newcomer, though his last name was familiar to Utahns.

In Utah County, 12 percent of ballots that were mailed out, 25,602 total, had been counted as of the Daily Herald's print deadline.

Utah County Clerk-Auditor Bryan Thompson told FOX 13 he anticipated a higher than normal turnout.
