Tony Ferguson-Kevin Lee interim title bout likely for UFC 216

Kevin Lee and Tony Ferguson to fight for shot at UFC star Conor McGregor confirms White

The fight will go down on October 7th at UFC 216, and will be for an interim lightweight belt.

Tony Ferguson will face off with Kevin Lee in a fight to determine the new interim titleholder at 155 pounds with the fight tentatively scheduled for October 7 at UFC 216 in Las Vegas.

Speaking to the media following the latest episode of Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series, UFC president and the show's namesake Dana White confirmed the veracity of those reports.

Ferguson is the No.2 contender and was expected to face top contender Khabib Nurmagomedov.

"Yeah, that's for sure", said White, on the matchup.

It's unclear at this stage if the UFC's decision to make the interim title fight at UFC 216 a month earlier instead had anything to do with the fact that Nurmagomedov is now out of the picture for the time being.

What about Khabib? According to White the vaunted grappler is still getting back to 100%, after undergoing surgery. Lee was passed over for a spot on The Ultimate Fighter as a coach, but it is possible this was the UFC's plan all along.

The #7 ranked lightweight Kevin Lee is on an impressive streak himself, with six straight victories including two Performance of the Night awards. He is scheduled to face Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match on August 26, and it is unclear if and when he will return to the Octagon.

Most recently, Lee dispatched former "Ultimate Fighter" victor Michael Chiesa by first round rear naked choke to put himself into position for a top fight in the division.

Ferguson (22-3) has won his last nine fights in a row as he's climbed the rankings in the lightweight division, including a win over former champion Rafael dos Anjos last November.
