Google Home can now make phone calls in the United States and Canada

Google Home is now officially a voice-controlled telephone

The feature will be rolled out completely for Google Home devices in the U.S. and Canada within a week. However, some users may find their friends are reluctant to answer the phone.

He said "OK Google, hang up" to complete the call. For now, it'll only display "unknown caller" when you call someone else, which could be problematic for folks who don't answer unusual numbers.

There's a workaround from the get-go, mind.

Unfortunately, calls will show up on the recipient's phone as "Unknown" or "No Caller ID" unless you have Google Voice or Project Fi, Google's wireless service. Calls to worldwide numbers and premium numbers will be supported and have a cost based on the current rate, but only if you have your Project Fi or Google Voice numbers linked to Google Home, otherwise these numbers are not supported for any other carriers.

Unlike Amazon, which recently launched a similar feature on its Alexa-powered Echo devices, the recipient doesn't need to have a Home or even a Google account.

Google Home users can call businesses listed in Google Maps or people in Google Contacts with a simple "OK Google, call [whoever]".

The device will permit calling to your Google contacts and businesses by voice alone.

While in call, you can place people on hold and ask the Google Assistant info. How are you enjoying the smart speaker? Remember, it is important to have the contact saved in your Google contact or on Google's cloud.

However, if you're using Google Voice or Project Fi? It's also possible to redial the last number attempted, and to control the volume. By default, the smartapp has the toggle turned on to allow Google Assistant access to all ST devices and routines. During that time, the person on the call won't be able to hear either what you're saying or the Assistant's response, and they won't be audible either.

If you own a Google Home, or plan on buying the technology soon, your life has just become that much easier.

When is Google Home calling arriving? 911 calls aren't supported. The latest update to the assistant now allows the users of Google's smart speakers to make free calls!
