The Spaniard last topped the men's singles rankings in July 2014 but will overtake Andy Murray at the end of the week following Roger Federer's injury setback.

Ivo Karlovic, who at 38 is one of the oldest players on the ATP Tour, had a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win over Czech 24-year-old Jiri Vesely while Italy's Fabio Fognini, 30, held off Russian youngster Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (7/5), 6-4.

Murray was absent with a hip injury and dropped 600 points from last year's runner-up showing in Cincinnati, so either Nadal or Federer was going to usurp him. "Roger and I are both having a great season". The 31-year-old has won four tournaments this year, including historic 10th titles at Roland Garros, Monte-Carlo and Barcelona. "If I do play him, I'll be very much looking forward to that and definitely think I can give him a good tussle".

"I will take a decision in the next couple of days and see how I feel after five days of playing, if I'm ready to play in Cincy next week or not", he said.

With his return to No. 1 in the world, Nadal will face dominating expectations at the 2017 US Open.

The announcement of Zverev's arrival undoubtedly means an extremely strong field is being built up, with Grand Slam champions Murray and Nadal both confirmed to be taking part in the tournament. Over the course of the contest, the German hit more winners, more aces and did not allow the circuit's most dominant player this year to break his serve even once.

"Unfortunately I won't be playing in Cincinnati as I continue my recovery", Murray said in a statement, adding he hopes to play at the US Open in NY later this month.

"Obviously it's bad news for the event that Roger is not playing". I skip many more events than the rest of my competitors. He's won two this year. With Gasquet being a quality player, Nadal understands the need to be on top of his game as the Frenchman can pounce on any mistake he makes.

Alexander Zverev who claimed his second Masters 1000 title in Montreal on Sunday is also in the draw, again seeded fourth. It has some of the best fans in the world and I am sorry I will miss them. "The greatest player of all time, beating him in a final, not just any final but in the final of a Masters 1000, is unbelievable".
