Dallas store selling "Free Zeke" t-shirts in wake of six-game suspension

The suspension decision comes after a year-long investigation into Elliott after he was accused of domestic violence in Columbus, Ohio. Elliott denied the domestic-violence allegations and last September the Columbus City Attorney's office they would not pursue charges in the case due to "conflicting and inconsistent information".

Elliott is planning on appealing the NFL's decision.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would be the primary league executive to hear the appeal.

If Elliott serves the entire suspension, he will be eligible to return to the team October 29, when the Cowboys travel to play the Redskins.

Elliott, the Cowboys' No. 4 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft, led the league in rushing yards (1,631) and rushing yards per game (108.7) as a rookie last season. Six games has been the league's standard for a domestic violence punishment.

After a year-long investigation, the National Football League said in a statement that four external advisors found that Elliot "engaged in physical violence" against a woman on several occasions in 2016.

On the bright side, that also opens the door for former Arkansas RB Darren McFadden to get more playing time.

Elliott can and likely will appeal.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the "benchmark" for the suspension is six games, though it could be fewer.

It was rumoured in recent weeks that Elliott could receive a short suspension prior to the start of the season, after allegations he assaulted a former girfriend.

In a statement, the league said investigators interviewed more than a dozen witnesses, consulted with medical experts and examined photographic and digital evidence.

In the past, Elliott, the 22-year-old running back has found himself in minor trouble. The league also considered a separate incident in which he pulled a woman's top down at a Saint Patrick's Day festival in Dallas.
