Putin vows continued Russian support for Georgia's rebel Abkhazia

"The United States views the visit of President Putin to the Russian-occupied Georgian territory of Abkhazia as inappropriate and inconsistent with the principles underlying the Geneva International Discussions, to which Russia is a party", a statement from department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.

Earlier in the day, Putin arrived in Abkhazia where he met with Abkhazian President Raul Khajimba.

Daniel Larison, American political scientist, speaking about the ninth anniversary of the August 2008 war, stressed that the commitment made at the Bucharest summit earlier that year significantly added to the tensions between Russian Federation and Georgia. He reportedly added: "We reliably guarantee the security, self-sufficiency, and independence of Abkhazia. We will not recognise any attempts to change the status of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as regions of Georgia". Most countries recognize them as a part of Georgia.

Putin met Tuesday with the president of Abkhazia, Raul Khadzhimba, in the Black Sea resort town of Pitsunda, and a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation spokesman in Brussels quickly denounced the Russian leader's move. "I am sure that will continue to be the case".

Saakashvili recklessly escalated the low-level conflict in South Ossetia and triggered a war with Russia by shelling Tskhinval, where Russian troops were stationed in a peacekeeping role, Larison stressed.

Both Abkhazia and South Ossetia self-proclaimed their independence from Georgia, but both are highly reliant on the Kremlin for military defence and financial backing.

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili has called Putin's visit "a violation of worldwide law".

Putin's visit comes as he appears to expand Russia's influence over eastern Europe.

In the outskirts of Georgian capital Tbilisi, a wreath laying ceremony at a military cemetery marked the commemoration of the war.

The U.S. statement came after Georgia and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation both expressed protest at Putin's visit.
