Bills trade Sammy Watkins and Ronald Darby in massive shakeup

Buffalo Bills make a splash acquire Jordan Matthews and E.J Gaines

Watkins was dealt to the Rams along with a 2018 sixth-round pick for cornerback E.J. Gaines and a 2018 second-rounder on Friday. The first three offensive plays for the Bills were all throws to Watkins, who caught all three. But then Bills GM Doug Whaley traded away the Bills first round pick in 2015 to grab Watkins. In his three years with the Bills, the former Clemson product has hauled in 153 passes for 2,459 yards and 17 touchdowns. By comparison, the man who will probably replace him in the starting lineup - Matthews, who was the Eagles' second-round pick in 2014 - has missed only two games in his career and has 225 catches for 2,673 yards and 19 TDs.

In Los Angeles, Watkins is reunited with former Bills starter Robert Woods, who signed with the Rams in free agency after four seasons in Buffalo. In flashes, he looked explosive, but he just couldn't stay healthy.

The Bills' front office was boosted by an offseason regime change that saw first-year coach Sean McDermott get more say in personnel moves. They no longer have to deal with the question marks that hover around Watkins, they get two solid draft picks and they also receive two solid players to help the team immediately.

Matthews has been a steady performer in Philadelphia.

The Rams need playmakers for an offense that finished last in the National Football League over the past two seasons. They also picked up a third-round draft pick for Darby. However, he's been nicked by injuries throughout his career and only appeared in eight games last season.

L.A. deserves some credit for making a move and trying to get better at the position, but they took a chance on an injury-prone receiver and gave up a high draft pick and a starter to do so.
