Dutch, Belgians launch raids over contaminated eggs

Manufacturers should reconsider their egg sourcing said British Lion Egg Processors

The Food Standards Agency now believes close to 700,000 eggs from affected farms on the continent have entered the United Kingdom, having previously put the figure at just 21,000.

The insecticide Fipronil, found in the eggs, can be harmful to humans if consumed in large doses.

The food regulator claimed on Monday that only 21,000 had been imported from implicated farms.

In eggs with a 27 July 2017 expiry date from the Dutch supplier 2NL4382501, a weak concentration of 0.008 mg per kg was determined.

The likelihood of any related food illnesses from consuming contaminated products is very low.

"However, fipronil is not legally allowed for use near food-producing animals and it shouldn't be there".

Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons, among other retailers, have recalled the likes of mayonnaise, salads and sandwiches following the news, The Independent reports.

At the time there was no evidence that there were any acute food safety risks involved.

It came after the insecticide contamination in eggs forced supermarkets in Germany and the Netherlands to remove millions of eggs from their shelves, and all eggs in Belgium were blocked from sale.

Dutch prosecutors said in a statement Thursday that the two men detained during a series of raids are directors of a company that allegedly used Fipronil in egg farms.

In Denmark, 40 eggs from a farm affected by Fipronil have been found at a baker, Nikolai Kuhn Hove of the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration told Denmark's TV2 channel.

The Food Standards Agency said it had found evidence that some 700,000 eggs had been imported over the period it is known fipronil was being used on Dutch poultry farms, Europe's biggest exporter of eggs.

The NVWA conceded that it received a tip-off in November previous year but stressed there was "no evidence" of a food safety risk.

Belgian investigators meanwhile identified 26 people or companies as suspects during the 11 raids by police and food safety agency officers, for offences including fraud and breaking European Union food laws.

It's believed that the insecticide got into the food chain when it was illegally added to a product used to treat poultry for lice, fleas and ticks.

Germany, which purchases Dutch eggs, launched its own investigation in July and warned both France and the United Kingdom on August 6 it had sent out contaminated eggs.

Two Luxembourg suppliers of prepared meals, Caterman and Carnesa, also reported having received cartons of liquid eggs from a contaminated source in Belgium.

The eggs at the centre of the scandal have mainly come from the Netherlands, followed by Belgium and Germany.
