Jaguars respond to Branden Albert's wish to end retirement

02 November 2014 Miami Dolphins Offensive Tackle Branden Albert plays against the San Diego Chargers in Miami's 14-13 victory at Sun Life Stadium Miami Florida

Jaguars reporter Mike DiRocco reports the team is "unlikely" to allow LT Branden Albert to return to the organization.

Albert initially announced his retirement on July 31 following three practices in training camp.

Albert skipped the Jaguars' entire offseason conditioning program and organized team activities, which was his right under the collective bargaining agreement because they are voluntary workouts. The Jaguars absolutely have enough money to keep him, but I think most people could understand any hesitancy for the team to do that. AP reporter Mark Long tweeted he'd be "shocked" if the Jaguars took Albert back after his unusual and surprising retirement last week. The Jaguars, however, would rather go with the younger, cheaper option at left tackle in rookie Cam Robinson.

It's equally unclear why Albert wants to return.

The Jaguars traded a 2018 seventh-round pick to the Dolphins to acquire Albert in March.

The Jaguars are now preparing for the preseason opener in Foxborough, Massachusetts against the New England Patriots, which will take place Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The former Chiefs and Dolphins offensive tackle would reportedly owe the Jaguars $3.4 million in signing-bonus forfeiture if he were to remain retired. He also is subject to fines of up to $40,000 per day for the time he was not with the team, according to

Albert, a first-round pick in 2008, is a two-time Pro Bowl selection.

Albert had two years remaining on the five-year contract he signed with Miami in 2014.

Fast-forwarding to the 2017 free-agency period, the Jags then elected not to retain offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum - and looking back, that seems to be a very questionable move now that Albert has retired.
