HBO Hacker May Have Faked Leaked Document to Target CEO Richard Plepler

The group who announced they hacked HBO last week have leaked new files from the company's servers, via private emails to the press and a website for everyone else.

In the video sent to Pleper, obtained by Mashable, the hackers say that they want up to $7.5 million in bitcoin delivered later this week.

The data dump included what appear to be scripts from five "Game of Thrones" episodes, including one upcoming episode, and a month's worth of email from the account of Leslie Cohen, HBO's vice president for film programming. (The Verge additionally reports that home addresses were part of the leak.) The information apparently came from the confidential cast list for the show, which was one of the documents hackers released online last night that also reportedly includes "a detailed summary" of next week's episode. Back then they had threatened to release more data from the upcoming episodes which they have now proved that they weren't joking about.

The hackers claim it took six months to break into HBO's network, and that they spend $500,000 a year purchasing so-called zero-day exploits that let them break into networks through holes not yet known to Microsoft and other software companies.

The demand, which is not dated, gives HBO a deadline of three days to make the payment in order to stem the release of the stolen documents, some of which reportedly contain personal contact information for Game of Thrones actors. So consider us another budget for your advertisements'.

HBO has acknowledged the theft, stating that it had begun working with law enforcement to address "proprietary information" the hackers had stolen.

HBO bosses have called in the FBI to investigate the security breach, while also working with police and cybersecurity experts in an attempt to prevent the release of any more information or unaired episodes.

HBO declined to comment beyond the statement it released on Monday, in which the company said it had no "reason to believe that our e-mail system as a whole has been compromised".
