Ahmed Patel says Gujarat Rajya Sabha polls victory to boost party's morale

While BJP national president Amit Shah and union minister Smriti Irani made it to the Upper House with 46 votes each, the party's third candidate and Congress turncoat, Balwantsinh Rajput lost to Patel in the final poll verdict.

The election has been necessitated following the completion of the tenures of three existing members Union Minister Smriti Irani and Dilip Pandya of BJP and Ahmed Patel of Congress. "I thank my party leadership for giving me this opportunity & all my party workers & colleagues whose relentless hard work made this possible".

He also said it was one of his most hard elections. Patel's victory would not take this away from Shah.

Rajput's defeat is only a temporary setback to the Modi-Shah duo.

Himachal Pradesh also goes to polls in December and BJP is hopeful of defeating the Virbhadra Singhled Congress government, banking on the reported anti-incumbency against him. That's why cries from the BJP are not rending the sky despite his personal victory. He disrupted the whole arithmetic that assured Patel an easy victory with the support of Congress MLAs. "It is not a victory of Congress party alone or of our senior leader Ahmed Patel", said Surjewala. But then things began to deteriorate for the already beleaguered Congress at a break-neck speed.

Blaming Congress for stalling the amendments moved by Centre to the OBC Commission Bill, Shah said "anti-backward" stance of Congress in Rajya Sabha would prove to be detrimental for them in Gujarat.

With 43 members of the Congress in the Gujarat Assembly-the gang of MLAs who were sequestered in Karanataka resort-presumably voting for him, where did the deal-breaker 44th vote come from?

An impatient BJP too rushed a battery of senior ministers, including Arun Jaitley, Nirmala Sitharaman, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Piyush Goyal and Dharmendra Pradhan to the EC to counter the Congress allegations. "They want to remove names of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and all other Congress leaders like Indira Gandhi etc. from history books..."

Ahmed Patel (INC) and Dilip Pandya (BJP) were about to end their terms on August 18.

Congress leaders Randeep Singh Surjewala and R.P.N. Singh first approached the Commission and demanded that the votes be invalidated for violation of Rule 39 of the Conduct of Election Rules and the EC's circular on security of ballots. In a midnight decision, the EC, ruled in favour of the Congress. With three seats up for grabs, three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates and one Congress candidate are in the fray.
