Zverev dominates Anderson in Washington to win Citi Open

Alexander Zverev

Zverev, ranked a career-best eighth this week, dropped only seven points on his serve and never faced a break-point in the 63-minute affair, extending ninth-ranked Nishikori's ATP title drought to 30 events over 18 months. "It's obviously a very big tournament so I'm very pleased to be through to the final", Anderson told reporters.

The 20-year-old German hit a forehand victor to break for a 2-1 lead in the second set and held to the finish, claiming victory when Nishikori netted a forehand.

He also ousted number four Stan Wawrinka at Miami and pushed Rafael Nadal to five sets in the third round of the Australian Open. I think I can take a lot from this week.

Zverev joined Rafa Nadal as a four-time ATP victor this year.

"It would mean a lot", Anderson said of a title. It will be interesting to see how the next little while progresses. "At some stage I want to win those kind of matches and get further in Grand Slams".

The 31-year-old, who equalled his best run at Wimbledon this year when reaching the fourth round, has been indebted to his great serving this week and he leads the field with 62 aces. At 20, and with only a few Tour-level matches under his belt, the world No. 225 can take satisfaction in a week of wins over France's Lucas Pouille, ATP rank 17, and Luxembourg's Gilles Muller, ATP rank 21.

Zverev's father, Alexander Sr., is a former tour pro from Russian Federation who now coaches Alexander and his older brother, Mischa, who's currently ranked 26th.

In the second set, an error by Anderson at 30-40 in the first game gave Zverev another break, and the German was hardly challenged from there.
