Brilliant Farah captures 10th successive global title

Mo Farah will be hoping to pull off his signature turn of speed in the closing stages of the 5,000m on Saturday.

He was twice tripped in a pulsating final lap before recovering to win his 10th global title in 26:49.53, ahead of Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei.

With Farah's African rivals seeking to topple him - nearly literally at times, with two stumbles in the final lap - the crowd gasped, then roared Farah home as he once again demonstrated the mastery that has been so unshakeable since the Olympics here in 2012.

With two laps to go Farah moved up to the shoulder of Hadis, passing him down the back straight, and as the bell rang he looked up at the big screen to see how his rivals were behind him.

Reuters picLONDON, Aug 5 ― Mo Farah came through one of the toughest 10,000 metres of his career to win gold at the World Athletics Championships yesterday and said it was his mental strength that had made the difference.

Farah was the favourite to prevail on home soil, having sensationally claimed gold medals in his last nine major global finals over 5000m and 10,000m. No runner has ever achieved that - not Kenenisa Bekele (four, with Olympic and World Championship doubles in 2008-09), not Haile Gebrselassie (six at 10,000m, but no double wins), not Lasse Viren (four at Olympic level in pre-World Championships days), not Emil Zatopek, not Paavo Nurmi. Indeed, a highly confident Farah had enough about him to occasionally wave to the crowd during a gruelling 25 laps.

"I had to dig deep with 1,600 metres to go and think don't let the gap go, try and cover every move and just try and be strong", he said. I've got a few cuts and bruises but I just have to recover and get ready for the 5K.

He added: "I've got a bad leg". It wasn't an easy race though. Fair play to them, they worked it hard and they chucked everything at me.

And Black shrugged off fears following the leaking of one IAAF report which said Farah was a "likely doper" after his biological passport flagged up unusual results.

3 - he has won three successive Great North Runs. From there on the race unfolded into the inevitable, and became all about Farah, who despite producing these unbreakable displays on the track, still can't distance himself from the shadow of drugs, specially his association coach Alberto Salazar, now being investigated by United States anti-doping.

Reece Prescod qualified in 10.03 seconds, with CJ Ujah joining him in 10.07 seconds and James Dasaolu coming home second behind Usain Bolt in the sixth heat in 10.13 seconds.
