Woman who urged friend to kill himself found guilty of manslaughter

Massachusetts texting suicide trial verdict to be announced

Moniz said both of their families had been "immutably changed" by the case, and as arguments closed Tuesday, Roy's family and Carter herself were left in tears.

Prosecutors argued meanwhile that, when Roy got out of his truck, Carter told him to "get back in".

A juvenile court judge found that Michelle Carter caused the death of Conrad Roy III.

"Miss Carter's actions but also her failure to act, where she had a self created Duty to Mr. Roy for putting him in that environment".

The victim's aunt Rebecca Maki added that the Roy family is "pleased with the outcome".

He continued, noting that Carter failed to tell anyone of his plans nor to "issue a simple instruction to get out of the vehicle".

Sobs broke out throughout the courtroom when the verdict was announced. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 3.

Defense lawyers used the same messages to depict Carter as a misguided teenager, addled by medication, who thought she was helping a deeply troubled friend.

Carter was 17 when she sent Roy messages encouraging him to take his end his life. The authorities, however, maintained that when Carter was 18, she sent her teen friend Conrad Roy text messages that "wantonly and recklessly" caused him to poison himself in a vehicle with carbon monoxide in 2014.

"You open up the door to a direction where words now can amount to weapons, this is absolutely all new territory" Harnais said. "The time is right and you're ready, you just need to do it!" "So she has to make it happen-she has to make him kill himself so that she's not seen as a liar".

The judge disagreed, saying he did not take into account in his verdict Roy's previous attempts at suicide. The New York Times reports that Carter had first attempted (via her texts) to talk Roy out of killing himself when he initially expressed a desire.

Hundreds of text messages presented as evidence showed that Carter urged the suicide, telling her boyfriend that all he had to do was turn the generator on and he would be free and happy, CNN reported.

What do you think of Michelle Carter's conviction? "You just have to do it".

"If you point a gun at somebody, you're pretty much intending to shoot them", Gutterman said. "Like I don't get why you aren't", she texted. Their relationship largely consisted of text messages and emails.

The judge issued his ruling Friday in court.

The fact that Roy may have tried to commit suicide again after the July 2014 parking lot attempt, and perhaps would have succeed on his own, did not affect the court's decision.
