Vikings player jailed for failed alcohol tests

The court hearing, scheduled for Monday in Arizona, has been enhanced by the Vikings' decision to send a letter supporting Floyd's belief that kombucha tea doesn't contain alcohol.

Minnesota Vikings receiver Michael Floyd will have to serve another day in jail and will have to finish the last five days of his house arrest in Arizona, according to ESPN.

An Arizona judge on Monday ordered Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Michael Floyd to serve one day in jail for failing alcohol tests that he blamed on a type of fermented tea.

He pleaded guilty in February to extreme DUI (blood alcohol content of.150-.199) and served 24 days in Maricopa County (Ariz.) Jail before having to serve 96 days on house arrest.

Floyd was able to have the house arrest sentence, which was set to expire June 17, transferred to Minnesota a month early so he could join the Vikings for their spring practices and minicamp. Abstaining from alcohol during that period was part of the sentencing.

Vikings officials say they encouraged Floyd to drink a fermented tea called kombucha he says was the reason he was flagged for drinking alcohol and violating terms of his house arrest.

"I am writing to request Mr. Floyd not have his court mandated requirements negatively impacted since he did not know the kombucha he ingested contained alcohol", Warren wrote June 21 to Floyd's attorney, Robert Feinberg, which was cc'd to Vikings president Mark Wilf, general manager Rick Spielman and coach Mike Zimmer. As a condition of that sentence, he could not consume alcohol during his house arrest.

Floyd was arrested for DUI on December 12 in Scottsdale, prompting his release two days later from the Arizona Cardinals. Floyd finished the season with New England but was inactive for the Patriots' Super Bowl LI victory over Atlanta.

In his letter, Warren explained how kombucha tea is "utilized by many professional athletes as a probiotic and is available at our facility on a daily basis".
