US mayors OK plan to use only renewable energy

GREG ALLEN, BYLINE: The U.S. Conference of Mayors is a bipartisan group.

"By planting thousands of new trees, transitioning our street lights to energy efficient LEDs, and putting zero emission buses on our streets, Long Beach will continue to lead in our efforts to protect our climate", Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia said in a satement. He says along with sharing ideas on fighting crime and other pressing issues, the health care battle in Washington has many of them concerned. On those issues, mayors highlight local actions and investment, but are asking the federal government for more resources and cooperation. This weekend, more than 250 of them are in Miami Beach. They also strongly rejected plans to increase immigration enforcement and vowed to persuade federal lawmakers to reinstate a popular $3 billion program (Community Development Block Grants) that funds local projects across the country.

US cities administrators have been asked to fill and submit a questionnaire that covers several aspects of the climate change issues.

The analysis of National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Energy Information Administration data comes before the start of the U.S. Conference of Mayors annual meeting in Miami Beach, from June 23-26, where members will consider a resolution that would establish support for the goal of 100 percent clean, renewable energy in cities nationwide.

Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine signed on in May, and just this week, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney became the 100th US mayor to come on board.

PHILIP LEVINE: That road is being made higher. So it's been a real journey, but it's a necessary journey.

The conference supported the Paris agreement, and according to preliminary results released Saturday morning from an ongoing nationwide survey, the vast majority of USA mayors want to work together and with the private sector to respond to climate change. The statement assumes significance after Trump's recent decision to pull out of the Paris Climate Accord which was met with criticism from all over the world.

36 cities across the United States have now committed to transition to 100 percent renewable energy. But Cornett, a Republican, and Landrieu, a Democrat, emphasized that many cities don't have the financial standing to do what other cities have done on their own.

It's the first time Miami Beach has hosted the event since 1962.

MITCH LANDRIEU: You're going to see a new governing model emerging in this country.

"There may be a little bit of a disagreement about how actually to deal with it", said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D), who is becoming the next president of the conference. Doing so would greatly reduce the city's carbon footprint - in 2015, electricity accounted for over three-quarters of all greenhouse emissions by the city government.
