U.S. student freed by N. Korea has 'severe neurological injury'

Mr Warmbier has his fingerprints taken at North Korea's top court

Doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said Thursday that released North Korean detainee Otto Warmbier suffered extensive brain damage, but said the 22-year-old us college student doesn't now show signs of botulism.

Otto Warmbier was arrested in January 2016 and charged with "hostile acts" against North Korea over allegedly stealing a political propaganda poster from his hotel.

A team of United States doctors have found "no sign of botulism" in the American student freed by North Korea after more than 15 months in captivity. "I'm so proud of Otto, my son, who has been in a pariah regime for the last 18 months - brutalized and terrorized".

"Otto is in stable condition but has suffered a severe neurological injury", Kelly Martin, spokeswoman for the UC Health University of Cincinnati medial center, told a news conference held jointly with the young man's father.

Warmbier's father, Frank Warmbier, addressed the media earlier in the day, saying it was "bittersweet" to have his son home. Otto Warmbier visited North Korea as part of a tour organized by a China-based company. He was sentenced to 15 years in a labor camp.

Warmbier said even if the North Korean story was true, there's still no excuse for keeping a 15-month coma a secret until last week and denying him access to top-notch medical care.

North Korean officials claimed Warmbier fell into a coma after contracting botulism and taking a sleeping pill.

"North Korea is a Praia regime".

"Dennis Rodman had nothing to do with Otto", he said. It was only a week ago that we were informed that the North Korean government now claims he was in a coma for nearly all of that time. Otto wore the same coat on March 16, 2016, during the televised "confession" of his crimes against the North Korean people and government.

Doctors in Cincinnati say an American college student who was imprisoned in North Korea suffered a severe neurological injury.

"Relief that Otto is now home in the arms of those who love him and anger that he was so brutally treated for so long", he said at a news conference at Wyoming High School, where Warmbier graduated in 2013 as class salutatorian and played soccer.

An American named Otto Warmbier, 22, was released this week by North Korean officials in an very bad condition. "So we're looking to the future". He also said that he "doesn't see a tough approach to North Korea".

The State Department is continuing to discuss three other detained Americans with North Korea.
