For months, President Trump has been obsessed - publicly and privately - with clearing his name in relation to the ongoing investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and potential collusion with members of his campaign. Last week, Comey testified in a Senate hearing that he believed he was sacked "because of the Russian Federation investigation". On three occasions, Comey said he was not. Last week, former FBI Director James Comeytold Congress he believes he was sacked by Trump to undermine the agency's Russian Federation probe. "I'm not under investigation".
Rosenstein prepared a memo for Attorney General Jeff Sessions back in early May, which raised repeated questions about how Comey had handled the Hillary Clinton email investigation - at first, that seemed to be the basis for Comey's firing by the President, until Mr. Trump said a few days later that the Russian Federation investigation was on his mind.
Also Wednesday, Senate Judiciary Chairman Charles Grassley said his panel will investigate the removal of former FBI Director James Comey and "any alleged improper partisan interference in law enforcement investigations". Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), who said she's anxious that the President will try to fire both Mueller and Rosenstein.
Trump wasn't under investigation personally prior to Comey's firing on May 9.
"I'm growing increasingly concerned that the president will attempt to fire not only Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating possible obstruction of justice, but also Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein who appointed Mueller", Feinstein stated in the release.
A source familiar with the Mueller investigation confirmed the report, saying an examination of possible obstruction of justice charges was "unavoidable" given testimony by former FBI Director James Comey, although the issue may not become the main focus of the probe.
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller last month, testified Tuesday he has seen no evidence of good cause to fire Mueller.
"The interviews (with Rogers, Coats and Ledgett) suggest that Mueller sees the question of attempted obstruction of justice as more than just a "he said, he said" dispute between the President and the fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director, an official said". He also told the Senate Intelligence Committee in 8 June testimony that he believed Trump had directed him to drop a related agency investigation into the president's former national security adviser, Michael Flynn. Trump cited the memo in firing Comey.
Trump appeared unbowed by the new revelations.
"They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story", he tweeted just before 7 a.m. "Nice".
