'Transformers: The Last Knight' debuts to a franchise low

The haul puts "The Last Knight", which opened Wednesday, on track to gross about $64 million over the five-day weekend. The feature garnered $5.5 million from Tuesday night previews, and only $15.6 million on its opening day.

The director, for his part, has previously claimed he was set to walk away from the Transformers series, before returning to make another movie.

The latest edition of the Transformers movie series, "Transformers: The Last Knight, " opened this week. Imax theaters contributed $24.3 million.

But the movie starring Mark Wahlberg was a huge hit in China, where it debuted with 123.4 million USA dollars (£96.4 million). Together, the three characters must race to uncover the secret history of the Transformers before the world is destroyed. The previous installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, earned $241 million domestically and $804.6 million internationally, for a global total of $1.045 billion. "Transformers: The Last Knight" is the fifth instalment of "Transformers".

Ahead of the weekend, the film has an audience rating of about 62 percent.

According to Box Office Mojo, the Friday numbers are rather in line for how the overall weekend box office should look when it is over. While the movie has an impressive cast including Sir Anthony Hopkins, Josh Duhamel, Stanley Tucci, and Jerrod Carmichael, buzz has been low, with the film failing to garner much chatter on social media amidst a summer full of big budget action movies. It will now be up to newly installed Paramount chairman-CEO Jim Gianopulos to decide the fate of any further chapters beyond the spinoff.

At number two, and continuing its domestic rise to the top, is Wonder Woman with $26.1 million, only falling 39% from last weekend. In four weeks, it has surpassed 300 million U.S. dollars (£234.4 million) in America. Globally, the Gal Gadot-starrer's gross stands at $652.9 million.

"Wonder Woman" and "Cars 3" tied for second place, each claiming $25.1 million this weekend. It will be behind only Transformers and Disney*Pixar's Cars 3 which is doing well in its second week of release.

Despite North American numbers being low, the franchise is hoping for global success. What's interesting is that no other studio dared to counter-program Last Knight, which is amusing because it's not like the movie is vacuuming up the weekend's entire business.

Amazon Studios and Lionsgate's critical darling The Big Sick, which debuted in five theaters, earned $435,000 for a robust screen average of $87,000.
