Thousands Pull Lord Jagannath's Chariot Till Gundicha Temple Despite Downpour In Puri

10 years on Keredagarh Jagannath still out of bounds

More than 30 thousand devotees participated in pulling the three decorated chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra being carried on three colourful wooden chariots, festooned with flowers, appliqué and mural paintings.

The Rath Yatra procession generally stretches as long as 1.5 km and winds its way along a 15 km route through the walled city before returning to Jagannath temple in Jamalpur area after nearly 12 hours. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel performed "Pahind Vidhi"- a symbolic ritual of cleaning the way for the chariots.

Hindu devotees took out the annual rath yatra (chariot procession) of Lord Jagannath in the Capital on Sunday.

"I had some urgent work, so I couldn't come yesterday".

In Odisha, a sea of humanity today continued at the holy town Puri to witness the world famous chariot festival of Lord Jagannath and his siblings. Invited guests worshiped lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra and cleaned the path with brooms. On their way back to the Temple, the gods are offered Poda Pitha when their chariots stop at the Mausi Maa Temple. All three chariots were parked at Saradha Bali in front of the Gundicha temple. "Climbing the chariots and touching the deities during the Rath Yatra is not permissible as per the order of the Orissa High Court", said SJTA Chief Administrator PK Jena.

This annual festival celebrated on Ashadha Shukla Paksha Dwitiya (second day in bright fortnight of Ashadha month) commemorates Jagannath's annual visit to Gundicha Temple via Mausi Maa Temple (aunt's home).

Then, the Darapadalan Rath of Subhadra was pulled at about 4.30 pm and at last the pulling of the Nandighosh Rath was held at 5.15 pm. After the three chariots reached Gundicha temple, two persons tried to climb onto the chariots. They were identified as aides of a temple priest, said the police sources.
